Although multinational corporations dominate many markets, Danish companies consistently rank highly when it comes to innovation – at least from the consumer perspective. Anyhow this phenomenon has received surprisingly little scholarly attention.

According to Associated Professor of Management Darius-Aurel Frank this is unfortunate. A better understanding of why Danish firms are perceived as innovative could help address key challenges related to digital, sustainable and responsible innovation. These insights should not be lost but shared more widely.

With a Semper Ardens Accelerate grant from the Carlsberg Foundation of DKK 6.2 million, Darius-Aurel Frank is now able to establish a dedicated research group to fulfill his five-year project, entitled “Decoding Danish Firm Innovativeness from the Consumer Perspective”. The project draws on the Danish Innovation Index (a comprehensive research database that Darius-Aurel Frank has helped develop) and will be supplemented by consumer behaviour experiments and other multi-method research approaches.

By transforming a large-scale database of consumer perceptions into structured academic research, the project aims to create a unique research platform for understanding why Danish firms consistently lead in innovativeness across a wide range of industries.

The expectation is that the research group will produce knowledge that helps future innovations and strategic decisions become more responsible, inclusive and sustainable.

The funding is awarded through the Semper Ardens Accelerate programme, which supports newly appointed tenured associate professors in establishing independent research groups or research environments. Darius-Aurel Frank’s grant amounts to DKK 6,228,832.
