Firm De-Internationalization: The Role of the Incoming CEO

Abstract
To date, research has focused on the characteristics of the foreign subsidiary, the parent firm, and the host country in explaining foreign divestment. In this study, we offer a complementary perspective to explain firms’ foreign divestments by highlighting the role of an incoming chief executive officer (CEO). Combining cognitive and social psychology with international business, we reason that incoming CEOs are aware that they are under scrutiny by the board of directors and other powerful stakeholders, and perceive tremendous pressure to demonstrate their ability to run the firm successfully. Therefore, incoming CEOs are motivated to engage in impression management.

Everyone is welcome!
