Comparing Apples with Apples: The performance of state and privately owned Chinese football clubs
Abstract
The increased importance of state-owned enterprises around the world has led to a renewed interest in state capitalism. An often-discussed topic in this literature is performance effects of state ownership, not least in large state capitalist countries such as China. However, in China (and in other state capitalist countries) analysis of performance is all but impossible as the Chinese economy is bifurcated, with state and privately owned enterprises operating in separate industries under radically different conditions. Seeking a better basis for comparison, we in this study therefore analyse the performance effect of state ownership on Chinese football clubs. We furthermore test whether any such effect is mediated by transfer spending and whether state owned clubs get preferential treatment from referees during matches. We argue that the analysed variables are useful proxies for factors such as resource endowment and institutional support, which are frequently discussed and theorised in the literature on state capitalism.
Everyone is welcome!
