A product leader response to industry platformization: The case of Philips Hue and the smart home market

Abstract
This study examines how incumbent product leaders sustain long-term competitiveness amid the platformization of their industries. Based on an longitudinal case study of Philips Hue (2012–2023) in the nascent smart home market, drawing on primary and secondary qualitative data, we analyze adaptive strategic responses to the challenges posed by industry platformization. Our findings reveal a dynamic process of continiously relinquishing control over certain technical layers while simultaneously reasserting it in others. We theorize the dominant complementor strategy - a proactive incumbent response that focuses on maintaining category leadership within emerging platform ecosystems rather than competing against or withdrawing from them.
