Multimodality, digital literacy and video-based communication: a research agenda

This talk is divided into two interrelated strands: the first part is devoted to explore how multimodality and socio-semiotic approaches to communication can be applied to explore digital texts. Digital literacy is today more than needed in any private or public domain, and research has shown that it encompasses much more than the ability to master technical digital skills. Some examples from video-mediated conversations will be discussed during the talk to show how a full awareness of resources that are co-deployed in interaction is fundamental to understand how video-based events make meanings and how they differ from face-to-face conversations even though video-mediation creates an imitation of what happens in face-to-face contexts (Sindoni 2013).

The second part of the talk will be devoted to sketching the overall framework of a European-funded research project that is based on the idea that multimodality is crucial to develop digital skills in university contexts at all levels. The EU-MADE4LL research project is aimed at improving expanded notions of digital literacy that involve multimodal, socio-semiotic and critical skills and experiments on collaborative teaching and learning practices. 

Bio note
Maria Grazia Sindoni is Associate Professor in English Linguistics and Translation at the University of Messina (Italy) and was conferred full professorship habilitation in 2017. Her research interests include webcam-mediated spontaneous interaction, multimodal studies, digital literacy, systemic-functional grammar, and multimodal critical discourse analysis. She was awarded the AIA Book Prize in 2016 for the best research monograph in linguistics (years 2013-2016) for Spoken and Written Discourse in Online Interactions. A Multimodal Approach (London & New York, Routledge, 2013).
